WFN support statement for the UN Special Rapporteur report on prostitution and violence against women and girls

We have issued a support statement for the recent report by Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem on prostitution and violence against women and girls. This letter was written to highlight the critical findings of the report, which underscores the inherent exploitation and systemic violence within prostitution. The report meticulously examines how prostitution is both a cause and consequence of gender-based violence, perpetuated by patriarchal norms and socioeconomic inequalities.

It calls for a paradigm shift in addressing prostitution, advocating for an abolitionist approach that criminalizes buyers and profiteers while decriminalizing those exploited. By framing prostitution as a violation of fundamental human rights, the letter aims to garner support for the report’s recommendations, which include legislative changes, comprehensive support services for victims, and public awareness campaigns.

These measures are expected to significantly impact efforts to combat exploitation, support victims, and ultimately dismantle the harmful system of prostitution. We are committed to promoting human rights and stand firmly behind these crucial measures, believing they will foster a more just and equitable society.
